MEMORIES OF

GUANABARA'S BAY

The image of Guanabara Bay is recognized even by those who have never set foot in Rio de Janeiro.

Between 1550 - 1560 there were only about 32 Tupi villages around Guanabara Bay, but it soon became the center of European colonization in the Rio region and to this day it is even a focal point for communication and commerce. It remains the gateway for those who arrive here from abroad, regardless of the means of transport.

This central role brought development and, unfortunately, its ills. If in the past the developmental view that nature should be tamed and suppressed was the rule, today we know that there is no development possible without environmental preservation.

On the other hand, through the perspective of art...

After the arrival of Europeans, the Bay became the focus of several works of art. Paintings showing the Bay at the time of the creation of the City of Rio until today are visible in museums in the city. Its representation in literary works involves writers of all times and literary trends.

Popular culture through its legends, songs and stories also place BG in a prominent place, sometimes as a background, sometimes as a central object but always with an unrestrained passion of its authors.
